Day 140

Ben and I had a really fun time registering at Babies 'R Us, this weekend. It was completely different than my first experience (alone). I am so glad I let everyone talk me into having a pre-baby shower. Getting the guest list together, researching baby products, and registering has been a fun way to monopolize our time over the last few weeks. It also makes me feel more like an expecting mom. We stood in front of the nipple section of the first aisle for what I thought was an awkward amount of time (we had no idea what we were doing!), until I looked over and saw a very prego friend doing the same. She looked at me and said, "I have no idea which to pick and I'm not sure what we're having." Without hesitation, I said, "We don't know what we're having either and I've never had to pick out nipples before." At that moment, I felt just like every other first mom awaiting her due date, stuck in a nipple aisle wondering how in the world we're going to raise a baby. Not only were the choices overwhelming, we couldn't even say the word nipple without bursting into smile.

The experience left me full. I'm certainly not "ready" for a baby, but who is? Moms are always talking about milestones the first year: smiling, cooing, rolling, sitting, etc. Registering is definitely a benchmark to first time parenting. It finally feels real. WE ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO HAVE A BABY. Nothing could feel more wonderful.

  1. Cute new photo on your header! :) Congrats on registering!! You will still "not know" about nipples, etc until your little one is here and it's usually trial and error from there... :)

  2. Ditto on the first post. It is totally a figure it out as you go process with a baby, but it is so much fun figuring it out! Congrats on getting registered!

  3. No matter how many varieties of nipples you get, they'll always prefer the one you don't have. It just prepares you for when they are two and thirteen.

  4. Yay for registering! It's a great distraction from the waiting. I agree about the nipples, they are overwhelming...about the same as the feminine hygiene aisle IMO. :)

  5. I love the new photo on your blog. I also don't know anything about nipples and it wasn't until I read your post that it occurred to me that there are nipple options. Wow. So much to learn!

  7. One day at a time...that is what being parents is all about. It is always a new adventure, always something new around the corner. You learn as much as they do right along with them. I have no doubt that you and Ben will be WONDERFUL parents. It is getting so real now.

  8. There are so many choices of nipples. My Ben had a reflux problem so nipples and formula where quite the challange/trial and error. We started out with the playtex drop ins, switched to the avent bottles (which severly leak by the way) and switched back to the playtex dropins. I personally really like the ease of the dropins. Just my opinion though. I remember registering finally feeling like I was going to be a mama. Congrats!!!

  9. No one is ever ready to be a parent, because there is nothing quite like it in this world to prepare you. It's humbling, trying, tiring and absolutely wonderful.

I think registering and having a baby shower is a great idea before the baby comes. It makes it real and is a good way to pass the time. Plus, having everything when your baby does come will be a big help. We had nothing when we got our call and had to make a mad dash to Walmart, as did our parents. Not a bad way to do it, but it would have been nice to have a few things.

And trust me, no one knows about nipples. With our first daughter, we had to have three different kinds. She would do really well with the Avent for a while, and then we would have to switch to Playtex, and then another. It is all about trial and error. Even the 2nd time around!

Wow, I don't even know you and I am anxious and excited for you!!!!! Such an exciting time!

  10. Firt off - LOVE the new pic!!! Such a beautiful couple.

Secondly - you are more ready than you know. You have a heart full of love for a child that you do not even know yet. A child not of your own womb, but already growing in your heart. You will figure out the rest - just like all of us - as you go along. You obviously have a great family and friend network to help you along and help you through the fears. YOU will be a fabulous mommy and Ben is gonna be such a great Daddy - I can tell just from what you have written about him here.

Just cherish the joy and follow your heart and you will be just fine - better than fine!!!

And to top it all of, you have the love our Father to show you how to love YOUR children. What more do you need?

And nipples - just pick one. The baby will get used to it and it will be fine. If you DO need to switch later, switch. I cannot tell you how many different types of pacifiers are floating around my house because I tried to figure out which kind they wanted. Turns out, they didn't want a paci at all! The baby(ies) will tell you what you need to know. It is amazing how that works!

  12. I am SO glad this visit went so much better. I have to say I am absolutely terrified of registering and have NO idea what to pick. We are both so clueless. Honestly, I have never even changed a diaper in my lifetime. EEK!
You guys are doing great and you are going to have so much fun at your shower. I cannot wait to see photos.
    *hugs*

  13. I love the new header. I think you have inspired me to actually go in and register. Last night we set up our travel system that we got as a gift and it still doesn't feel real- maybe registering will, but my guess is not. At very least it will be fun, though! As far as nipples, the only advice I have is that I have heard silicone is better than latex. Don't know why, though.

  14. And now you've got me smiling! It's so true, there are so many things to choose and think about and figure out. I keep telling myself it will all fall into place once we hold our sweet baby in our arms (and I know it really will) but the whole idea of really having a baby that doesn't go home at night is sometimes overwhelming. Congrats to you, I can't wait to hear more about your shower when it happens! :)
